DOT Conducts Public Information Session

The Georgia Dept. of Transportation (DOT) held a public information session last Thursday on the Hwy. 83/Church Street proposed drainage improvement project slated to begin November 2007.

The project consists of drainage improvements at the intersection of Hwy. 83 and Church Street. The area experiences substantial flooding during heavy rainfall whereas the existing structures are inadequate and unable to accommodate the runoff, according to an announcement from DOT Director of Preconstruction Todd Long.

The existing stretch of Hwy. 83 consists of two 12-foot lanes with curb and gutter on the west side. The state route is currently classified as a minor urban arterial with 2010 traffic projected at 5,000 vehicles per day and 2030 traffic projected at 6,900 vehicles per day.

The proposed construction will add curb and gutter, upgrade and increase the number of drainage structures and correct insufficient cross slopes. A small retaining wall will be required on the east side of the highway.

The existing road will be closed during construction and a DOT proposed detour will be in effect for approximately 120 day.

The informal session allowed residents to view proposed plans for the project, location maps, and the proposed detour route.

Comment cards have been made available and residents are encouraged to submit written comments about the project to Harvey Keepler, State Environmental/Location Engineer, GDOT, 3993 Aviation Circle, Atlanta, Georgia 30336-1593 or via email at www.dot.state.ga.us.

The project displays and plans will be available for review until November 12 at the DOT Milledgeville Office.
