Winning Is A Family Affair

It wasn’t exactly that John Braden couldn’t let his wife of eight months get the best of him, but it seems fitting that he should catch up and win a weekly News football Contest prize as Missy, his wife, did two weeks ago.

Unlike Mrs. Braden, who with her children is a veteran contest player, Mr. Braden had not entered the contest before this year. He caught on fast, becoming one of five contestants last week to pick winners of 12 of the 14 games listed. His tiebreaker prediction of 33 points was the lowest of the five and thus closest to the six points scored in Edmund Burke’s shutout of Piedmont.

Mrs. Braden picked up her husband’s prize from David Leach, pharmacist/owner of Monticello Drugs/Radio Shack, sponsor of the week. Mr. Braden is following a tradition of sorts; Mrs. Braden’s son, Trevor, was a contest winner at age nine in 2001.

Besides dashing the hopes of Piedmont fans who hoped to see their team go on to a state championship, the Cougar loss upset a lot of contest players who predicted a home team win. Mr. Braden wasn’t one of them; he missed on upsets by Baltimore over Atlanta and Cincinnati over New Orleans.

The pro games were tough to predict and college wins by North Carolina and Boston College were among those that surprised many players.

Besides the top five finishers four entrants picked 11 winners to qualify for the grand prize drawing for a premium ticket package to the 2006 Peach Bowl. The winner of the drawing will be able to take three guests to the game, with admission to pre-game festivities and souvenirs.

Time is running out for contest players to add their names to the Grand Prize Honor Roll. Only two weeks remain in the contest. This week’s sponsor is Covington Ford. Details are on page 15.

The News office will be closed Thursday, of course, but entries may be faxed in today through Friday, or brought in person until noon today, Nov. 22, and all day Friday.

As always, football contest entries (and other correspondence) may be put in the mail drop at the front door anytime the office is closed.
The deadline to deliver entries to The News office or fax them to 706-468-6576 is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24.
