Kevin Gaston Wins for 2nd Time
It had been more than 10 years since Kevin Gaston won a Monticello News Football Contest until this year; now he’s won twice in the same season. He’s now thought to be the winningest member of the Gaston family who have been playing the contest almost since its inception.
The latest win earned him a $25 prize from Monticello Tire & Automotive, sponsor of the week. Tyler Lewis presented the prize at the company’s new location on Edwards Road, with Joel Gaston accepting for his son.
Until September of this year, when Kevin won the weekly prize from Pete’s BP, he hadn’t won since he was a youngster back in 1995. In the meantime his dad, Joel; mom Jan, and brother Kyle have won at least once, but none has taken three weekly prizes.
Joel Gaston as owner of Jasper County Lumber Co. also is a contest sponsor. (And, incidentally, no family member can win this week, as Mr. Gaston will be sponsor, as normal, when Georgia and Auburn, his alma mater, face off.)

Kevin now lives in Jefferson and makes his picks by phone for mom or dad to deliver. Last week he and Roger Minter were the only two entrants to pick winners of 14 of the 15 games listed. He predicted that 52 points would be scored in the tiebreaker game, Monticello’s 41-27 thrashing of GMC for a 68-point total. Mr. Minter’s guess was 48 points.
Another half-dozen entrants picked winners of 13 games, and 18 had 12 correct picks. All these names will be added to the grand prize honor roll, many for the second or third time. Each time a player has 12 or more correct picks his or her name goes into the pot for a chance to win the big grand prize: a deluxe four-ticket package to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
Results of other games last week included: Piedmont 41, Heritage 7; Aquinas 41, Hancock Central 12; Georgia 44, Troy 34; Virginia 17, Wake Forest 16; LSU 41, Alabama 34; Arkansas 48, South Carolina 36; North Carolina 16, Maryland 13; Michigan 28, Michigan State 24; Georgia Southern 38, Wofford 35; Atlanta 20, San Francisco 16; Tennessee 20, Carolina 7; Green Bay 33, Kansas City 22; New Orleans 41, Jacksonville 24, and Washington 23, N.Y. Jets, 20.
Mr. Gaston at Jasper County Lumber Co. will present a $25 prize to the contest player who picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, in this week’s contest. Games are listed with sponsors ads on page 19, along with the entry form, contest rules and honor roll list.
Entries must be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 9.
