Recreation Commission Sets Fall Ball Calendar

The Jasper County Recreation Commission held its regular meeting June 10, at the Recreation Complex, where the first item on the agenda was their calendar for sports.

Football equipment will be issued on August 3, a week after the draft, and practice is scheduled to begin that day.
Soccer will begin the week after Labor Day and will be for ages four and five, six and seven, eight and nine, and 10 and up. Tennis will begin at the same time and for the same age groups, but will take place at Funderburg Park rather than at the recreation complex.

More detailed information will be published and also, registration and other information may be accessed at the Recreation Department’s web site: jaspercountyrecreation.com.

After much discussion concerning the concession stand and the many details of its operation, the board unanimously passed a motion to simplify their involvement by offering the operation up for lease.

An announcement will be forthcoming concerning the bids, which must be in by August 1, at a minimum bid of $5,000, with the board reserving the right to approve menu elements and pricing.

Unpaid invoices were a serious subject on the board’s agenda. Invoices which are signed off on by the board are then passed on to the County Manager’s Office for payment. It seems that approved invoices as far back as the first of the year have still not been paid, placing the Board in a vexing position.

Director Ira Warnock suggested a checkbook being kept in the recreation office with checks requiring two board member’s signature, with a check limit, similar to a petty cash fund, to take care of smaller items.

It was agreed to ask the county for an open monthly purchase order, similar to other county departments, for daily operations. It was also agreed that each board member would contact their respective county commissioner to alleviate the problem.

The board also agreed to give Mr. Warnock permission to request a 250 gallon fuel tank for operation of park equipment.

Before closing the meeting, the board agreed to pursue a plan to purchase heavy duty trash cans with liners, and a dumpster for the park, and offer sponsorships for both.
