Coach Is Nominated to Hall of Fame

Bobby Holland

Bobby Holland, who was head coach of the Monticello Hurricanes football team from 1956-1966 has been nominated to the Georgia High School Coaches Hall of Fame.

Judge John Lee Parrott, who played football under Coach Holland, has nominated him to the Hall of Fame and is encouraging others who think he is deserving of the honor to do the same.

In his letter of recommendation, Judge Parrott said of Coach Holland, “He taught me invaluable athletic and education lessons—ones that always have and will guide me in my life….I can represent all his many players who, under his supervision and discipline, learned how to play football and, most assuredly, better live our lives. In our small hometown, he mentored us into having a quintessential Georgia high school football experience. I know I speak for all his players in saying that we would not trade anything for this.”

Mr. Holland coached the 1956 state championship team that many authorities have considered as one of the all-time best Middle Georgia teams. As Head Coach, Mr. Holland led his teams to a combined record of 86-30-4.

“Above all else, he taught us, his players, that the way to seek excellence was through dedication and hard work. He always built us on a foundation of conditioning and fundamental football, and from these he molded the strength, the skills and the courage for us to attempt the rest where he would lead us….He imparted to us much about successfully playing football and meeting the challenges of life,” Judge Parrott said.

Others who would like to send letters of recommendation to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) should address them to Terry Rogers, GACA, 2525 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, GA 30066.

A spokeswoman for the GACA said that the nominations should be in by the end of October.
