School Begins . . .
(Editor’s Note: Janet Jernigan, who lives in Turtle Cove, and has contributd to this newspaper before, has begun writing a short, weekly column. Intended to be a lighthearted, short read, we’d love to hear what you think about it after a few weeks.)
School has started again; the big yellow school bus drivers will be playing our neighborhoods in search of boys and girls yearning to learn. The kids in our neighborhood get picked up at 6:45 a.m. and deposited again at 4:30 p.m. Most use the ride time for sleep, in between those times, their eager little minds will hopefully be absorbing knowledge like sponges.
The Monticello News recently printed “The List” of school supplies needed to assist the youth of our community in learning. I noticed this year, the schools are offering an option to purchase all supplies for $20 per student or you have to somehow find all “The List” items on your own. The $20 option sounds like a deal to me.
Otherwise, a parent or someone will attempt to find the 3-hole purple binder with pockets, the protractor (sounds like a dentist tool), a gallon of hand sanitizer, a couple dozen #2 pencils with erasers and the rest of “The List,” all while fighting their way through the “school supply” aisles and getting to hear the tender shrieks of “NO, I only want the red SpongeBob notebook!”
Alas, do I hear the squeal of brakes on the school bus, yes, school has begun again.
