The 90’s Club

Maybeth Doster Thurmond
Mrs. Thurmond is now 93, born in Putnam County in 1915. He parents were James Clarence Doster and Minnie Mae Grimes Doster. The couple had six children; Charlie, Marie, J.C., Vera, Louise and Maybeth.

Mrs. Thurman married Charles Raymond Thurman when she was 18 years old, he was several years older. They had two children, Steve and Gaydell who brought them eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was a housewife all of her life, tending to the garden and canning vegetables. Mr. Thurmond, born in Jasper County, farmed all of his life in Jasper County except for a short stay in Columbus. Maybeth is a solid Christian and a member of Smithboro Baptist Church and attends every Sunday.


Her mother died when she was six years old and her father when she was 14. She now lives with her son, Steve on Highway 16 East so give her a call and congratulate her on reaching 90 and joining the 90s Club.

Reva Brinkley Standifer
Mrs. Standifer is now 91, Born in 1917 in Eatonton, N.C., her father was Norman Brinkley and her mother Adelle Cross Brinkley. She was one of six children, three boys and three girls. She attended the public school in Eatonton, N. C. and then entered the North Carolina State Normal School in Elizabeth City, N.C. She was trained as a Rural School Teacher and accepted a job in Jasper County, Ga. in 1937 teaching in several rural black schools in the county.

Reva married Willie J. “Jaybird” Standifer, a local young man, in 1939. They had six children; Aaron, Norman, Nathanial, Eskine, Whichard and Joel. They are now all grown and have moved all over the U. S. However, they gave her 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

After the kids grew up, she enrolled at Fort Valley State College and received her Masters Degree in Education in 1962. She then taught 6th grade math at Washington Park School. She is a member of St. James Church and has been a Sunday School teacher for 30 years. She has a very neat house on Funderburg Drive full of collectables and miniature homes she has built.

Annie Louise Hooper Aiken
Mrs. Aiken is now 96 years old, born in 1913 in Jasper County to Henry Hooper and Anne Whitten Hooper. They had nine children; Riley, Minnie Lee, Mary, Louise, Lowell, Troy, Marie, Robert and Martha.

In 1940, she married Ray Aiken, also of Jasper County, and they had two children, Brenda and Robby who gave them three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

During World War II they worked at Naval Ordinance and Warner Robins Base and later both worked at the Aluminum Plant in Eatonton. Louise has traveled a lot in her later years and loves to garden and preserve vegetables in her kitchen.

She has enough canned goods from her own garden that she personally canned to last a lifetime. She is very active in the Methodist Church and still tends her garden and yards every day. She lives on Hillsboro Street and would love a call on her joining the 90s Club.
