Jasper High Graduate Is President

Demetria Williams

Demetria Williams, a 1991 Beta Club graduate of Jasper County High School, has been elected President of the Georgia School Counselors’ Association.

The organization known as GSCA is one of the largest counseling organizations in the United Stated with an average annual membership of approximately 1,300. She will serve as President-Elect until May, 2010 at which time she will be installed as President at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville.

Her first official duty will be to conduct a Leadership Development Institute at Georgia College and State University for her leadership team of approximately 80 members.

Miss Williams attended the University of Georgia and has an EdS (Educational Specialist) degree in Guidance and Counseling with add-on certification in Educational Leadership. From 1996-1998 she taught Business Education and was the Apprenticeship Coordinator at Jasper County High School. During 1998-2001 she taught Business Education at Morgan County High School. She then served in a position as counselor from August 2001-January 2009 at Duluth High School and is currently employed as Counseling Coordinator for Gwinnett County Public Schools.

In 2007, Miss Williams was honored by being selected Gwinnett County Secondary Counselor of the Year, Region Counselor of the Year, and Georgia School Counselors’ Association Secondary Counselor of the Year.

As a representative from GSCA, she attended the American School Counselors’ Association (ASCA) Leadership Development Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, this past year and was a Georgia Delegate to the ASCA Delegate Assembly/Conference in Dallas, Texas.

In March, 2010 she will join other Presidents in Washington, D.C. for the ASCA Public Policy Institute.

During this time she will meet with Senators and Representatives as an advocate for counselors and counseling positions across the country. In summer, 2010 she will once again represent Georgia at the National Delegate Assembly/Conference in Boston, Mass.

Demetria is the daughter of Dan and Patricia Carey of Shady Dale and Hollis Williams, Sr. of Monticello. Grandparents include the late Samuel “Bud” and Lula Belle Ross and the late Walker and Mamie Williams.
