Prepare for the Flu

With the continuous threat of a major flu outbreak, Jasper County citizens need to be prepared in case the flu hits your family.

A few simple steps can be taken by families to better prepare our homes to deal with flu patients.

All homes should have a disaster kit ready should the unexpected happen. Always keep the kit in an easily accessible location near an exit. Add items that would help you care for someone with the flu, such as:

•Thermometer, •Disposable gloves, •Acetaminophen (Tylenol®), •Ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®), •Bleach, •Soap, •Tissues,•Paper Towels, •Hand Sanitizer, • Surgical masks for each person in your household, •Sugar, baking soda, salt, salt substitute.

Remember individuals are contagious for up to 24 hours after they stop running a fever and can easily affect other family members even though they appear to be better.

If schools and day care facilities have to close, who will take care of your child? Will your employer let you work from home?

The H1N1 (Swine) flu does not treat its victims any differently than other strands of influenza. Every flu season carries the risk of developing into a pandemic.

If you have the flu, you will have a fever and some or all of these symptoms:
•Body aches, •Muscle pain, •Fever and chills, •Headache, •Dry Cough, •Runny or stuffy nose.

Remember always keep emergency contact numbers posted for quick access. Your doctor’s office, your drug store, friends and relatives you can always count on should head up your list.
