Passion
This week I would like to share some thoughts with you on the subject of passion. In order to do that, we need to begin by mentally listing some of those things in our lives about which we are passionate.
Webster’s Dictionary defines passion as an “intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction.” In other words we are passionate about those things which are important to us.
There are many things about which one can be passionate. In these challenging economic times many are passionate about preserving their financial assets while others are passionate about their jobs and vocations. Most people are very passionate about their family.
There are folks that are passionate about their golf games. Some are passionate about other outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. I’ve even been told there are a few folks that are fanatically passionate about supporting their college football teams.
The truth is that we all have our passions those things that cause us to have an “intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction.”
There is nothing wrong with having a passion. Indeed, a person is fortunate to have something in their life about which they can care deeply. One of the saddest sights one can ever encounter is the person whose life is completely devoid of passion.
This brings to the surface an important question. How passionate are we about the Christian faith? Do we practice our faith an “intense, driving or overmastering feeling of conviction?”
On the one hand it may seem trite and trivial to compare practicing the Christian faith to our other passions. After all nothing is more important than our faith, because the other things about which we may be passionate will pass away with time.
Our faith is eternal.
Therefore, the call for we who are followers of Jesus Christ is to practice our faith with the same passion that we bring to other passions in our life.
We are called to be passionate about the study of God’s word. We are called to be passionate about our prayer life. We are called to passionate about our attendance in his house for worship. We are called to be passionate about our service to others.
The overwhelming witness of scripture is that God calls his people be passionate about him and to be passionate about their relationship with him. Our faith is not something which we can take for granted; rather, it should bring forth the same passion for God that he has for us.
After all he was passionate enough to create us. More importantly he was passionate enough to redeem us through his Son our Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord.
