The Weather Outside Is Frightful

The Weather Outside
Is Frightful

Brrr…it’s cold.

Weather in Georgia has always been somewhat unpredictable, but if you had told me we’d have temperatures in the teens this FALL, I would have thought you’d lost your mind.

Well, folks, winter does not officially begin until next week, and there has been snow in Georgia, and temperatures right here in Monticello have been in the teens already.

As any of you who have seen it know, The News office is a very old building…probably 100 years or so. Therefore, it has no insulation, and plenty of cracks for cold air to blow in.

Monday night, the weather reporter on the nightly news said that the average for that date is 55 degrees, and went on to say that Monday’s high and low added together did not equal 55 degrees.
Being outside is not the only issue. Everyone at The News office knows how to dress for this weather, because we just don’t have the heating apparatus that will warm that building when it is 15 degrees outside.

So if you come in the office, and notice we’ve gained weight, we may have, or it may just be the two or three layers we have on under the outer layer that makes us look like we’ve been eating extra good.

Monday, I found I could be comfortable enough to work if I wore an undershirt, regular shirt, and a hoodie…and that’s in the building. To venture outside, add coat, hat and gloves.

Oh, and we do wear gloves inside too. We have gloves that have a mitten top, so the hand and part of the fingers are covered, and the mitten top folds back so we can type. We also have heated gloves that plug into a USB port.

Now, I’m going to make a confession. There was a house fire Monday night…and I heard it on the scanner, and did not respond. I was in bed, and heard the tones go off. I listened and four stations were paged to a house fire. I already had the front page of the paper laid out, and I thought how cold and windy it was, and I did not leave my warm bed. It might be a false alarm, I thought.

Well, it wasn’t. And someone on Deerfield Farms Road lost their home Monday. I sure am glad the VOLUNTEER firefighters are willing to go out in this weather. Thank you, firefighters.
