I’m Fixing to Feel Lucky
I’m fixing to feel lucky.
Almost everything in life happens by chance and we all constantly take chances whether we are aware of it or not, and sometimes we tend to leave everything to chance.
Occasionally we get on a lucky streak and everything seems to be going our way. Your team wins the big game, you get an unexpected refund from the IRS because of a lucky mistake you made on your return, and then you receive notification you won a contest which you had forgot you ever entered.
You know you ‘re clicking on all eight cylinders when you balance your check book and find two hundred dollars in your favor which you use to pay a payment on your credit card that saves you from paying a late charge.
Your rich uncle dies and leaves you his big fishing boat down on the Gulf Coast, and it just seems like everything is coming up roses.
All this good fortune and you forget to remember that a lot of things happen by chance, and you get real cocky and start behaving like life is just a breeze and you’re too lucky for anything bad to happen to you.
This is about the time you start taking chances because it’s obvious that nothing bad can happen to you, and you set yourself up for that inevitable fall.
The first thing that shocks you back into reality is when you arrive down on the coast, with plans to spend some time on your new boat, you discover it’s leaky and in disrepair, and estimates to get it seaworthy is going to take a lot more than that tax refund you got.
On top of that the dock fees are in serious arrears and the back taxes on it are beyond your means, so you just abandon it and return home to find a letter from the IRS requesting you contact them immediately.
After the dust settles the government admits to their mistake and reveals that you actually owe them several thousand dollars.
You decide that for peace of mind to just pay them only to find out you’ve been the victim of identity fraud and your checking account has been cleaned out.
And that contest you won—turns out the tax on the prize is equal to the value of the prize.
So the next time you feel lucky, you best remember that the bad will be fixing to follow the good.
