I’m Fixing to Save up Enough Money to Buy Myself a Tank of Gas

I’m fixing to save up enough money to buy myself a tank of gas.

One major news network just reported gas went up 33 cents a gallon over the last three weeks. At that rate it’ll be up to over six dollars a gallon by the end of June, which will limit my vacation travel to down to Hillsboro for a barbecue sandwich, or if I can sell a few books, maybe over to Shady Dale for some fresh sweet corn.

I remember back in 1958 when there was a gas war going on between all the gas stations to see who would sell it for the least, and the price per gallon went down to 17 cents. Different kind of war going on over the price of gas these days.

We used to pool our coins, buy a dollar’s worth and drive all the way down to Gulf Shores. Now it costs over a dollar just for a bottle of water while you’re filling your tank up for fifty dollars. And if someone had told me back then that I would be buying water one day, I would have told them they were crazier than a bed bug.

But I was talking about gas, not water. A few ways to save a little gas is to fill up in the morning when the gas, stored beneath the ground, is cooler and more dense. And if you fill up when your tank is half full, you will have less air in the tank and therefore less evaporation.

Another thing some folks say helps is that if you pump in the slow mode rather than the fast one, you will create less vapor and get more gas for your money.

The last time gas prices were driven to extremes was caused by Mother Nature, as in Hurricane Katrina. This time it seems to be caused by the actions of people, as in Libya, and other oil producing countries. But whatever the cause, high gas prices will definitely stifle our economy.

If we could get the price of gas down to $1.50 per gallon, we would see an economy humming beyond our imagination.
But for reasons beyond me, there are people who don’t want this to happen, who don’t want us to drill for oil and natural gas and sustain ourselves.

Another thing beyond my comprehension is why people support the very people and policies which drive the cost of gas and power beyond what they can pay.

If things don’t shape up pretty soon, I’m fixing to get me a mule, and just get there when I get there.
