Piedmont Learns of More State Champs
When Zach Benjamin won the state championship in the 220-meter dash recently, he joined other Piedmont Academy athletes who have earned state glory on the track.
In 1978, Todd Sauls won the state championship in the 100-yard dash in 10.0 and the 220-yard dash with a time of 23.0. The state meet was held that year at Southland.
Those efforts also allowed Sauls to compete at an event in New Orleans, which featured athletes from four states. Sauls would place second in those events in New Orleans with times of 10.45 and 23.6.
In addition, Lee Henderson won state in the two-mile run in 1981 and 1982.
An effort is currently under way to obtain information on any other state championship track athletes from Piedmont’s history.
