Commit to be Fit

By SUZANNE MCGINNIS
People might best know me as “The 8 Count Lady.” I had an exercise studio on the square for many years. Oftentimes when potential customers would call or come by to inquire about joining, they were unsure of where to begin or how to become healthy and fit.

Since I was providing an exercise service, I would encourage them to show up and try a class for free. Some came, some came and stayed, but most either never showed up or attended a few classes never to return.

Early in my career it bothered me that I could not help EVERYONE. But I quickly realized you can’t change anyone unless they are a willing participant. I continued to encourage enrollment for new students and offered challenges for my veterans. I stayed with it because it kept me in shape and was a service I believe I was called to offer our community.

Since a recent career change and the closing of the 8 Count in January of this year, I find myself still seeking ways to make a difference in Monticello. My hope is that through a regular newspaper column I can inspire, inform and motivate readers to stay healthy, get healthier or start on a path to a healthier lifestyle.
As we begin this journey together, my first suggestion would be to see your physician. I just recently went to my doctor to have a check-up and a simple blood test.

It gave me valuable information regarding cholesterol levels, blood pressure, hormone levels, etc. I recommend that everyone know what is happening inside their bodies.

Your physician should be aware of any changes to your diet or exercise regimen. If you don’t already know, find out from your doctor what a healthy weight is for your height and body type. If you desire to lose weight, set a realistic goal.

Whatever the wellness goal may be, treat yourself gently and kindly by starting slow and be patient. Anything worthwhile takes time.
Stay tuned for tips on exercise and healthy eating. The column will include practical ways to help you feel younger, get heart healthy and have more energy.

This column will also be used as a venue for readers to get answers to questions regarding their own individual journey to living a healthy lifestyle. Most importantly, it will give you the tools you need to lead a better quality life.

I do not claim to be an expert. I have not written a book, been on Oprah and am not a trainer to the stars. My knowledge comes from the example my parents set, the training and experience I have gained from teaching, and from practicing what I preach.

Not a day goes by that I am not creating, talking about or practicing wellness for my family and myself so that we can enjoy the best quality life.

Don’t wait, get committed!
