The Gift of Greens

I have become acutely aware of those in our community that rely on county resources to feed their families.

Because it can be expensive to buy healthy fruits and vegetables, these impoverished families are forced to eat non-perishable goods. Even with the efforts of the food bank and other Christian organizations, all needs are not met.

Although I am no master gardener, my husband and I have been experimenting for the last three years with growing our own vegetables. The start up costs can get expensive, but overall it is a great way to eat healthy on a budget. Each season I am amazed at the plethora of food varieties our garden produces, especially those indigenous to our area.

Many residents of Jasper County have successfully found ways to provide for their families in the midst of economic instability and rising costs of food by growing their own crops. Oftentimes there is such an abundance that families have enough to can or freeze until the next growth season.

Obviously that is simply not practical for families that don’t have the land or resources to get started, but those of us with more than enough can certainly share our goods.

If you are fortunate enough to either have a plentiful crop of fresh produce, or would like to be able to help those in need, call the Jasper County Food Bank. You will be giving a gift of good health to your neighbor.
