Fresh Bread

Only 53 minutes left, that’s what the bread maker clock read. The aroma of baking bread had wafted through the house and frankly, what aroma is better.

In nearly every country in the world, bread is a staple of the daily diet. Bread has even been the theme of a revolution. “Let them eat cake” was the response from the royals when the people of France begged for bread prior to the French Revolution.

France has its baquettes, Scotland the scone, Greece celebrates the pita, Mexico and the tortilla go together, San Francisco has long celebrated sour dough bread, and what would Italy be without pizza dough.

In the south, we love baking powder biscuits. Rolls, loaves, wheat, multi-grain, rye, flat, soda, corn, yeast, banana bread, so many kinds to choose.

Bread, bread, glorious bread, 22 minutes now, get out the cutting board, the bread knife and the butter. Celebrate one of the oldest foods on earth, buy or bake a loaf this week.
