Green Thumbs, or Fresh from the Market on the Square

There are some people who just have a natural green thumb who could probably just haphazardly pitch some seeds at the dirt and three months later those seeds would produce plants with big juicy tomatoes, large green bell peppers, you name it.

Then, there are the rest of us, the dreamers, the wanna be gardeners. Persistent, yes, successful, no.

As Southerners, we are all supposed to carry on the heritage of planting a garden after the last frost. And just how do we know when that LAST frost would be?

By relaying on the Farmers Almanac, we follow their code, “Plant root vegetables on the waning moon,” etc.

Oh, sure, at first, there are signs that this might be the year when we break the mysterious Aztec code and actually have a tomato larger than a marble.

There is a secret to all this gardening mumbo jumbo. All the gardeners will tell you their secret to growing their crops, “All you have to do is use some magic fertilizer, water on the third day after a rain or before a rain,” the list is endless, but they must be leaving out one real important detail, ‘cause it don’t work for me.

For the non-green thumbers out there, each Saturday at the Monticello Square, you can buy some vegetables from the green thumb people at Market Square and the only sweat you will put out will be taking it to your car. Get the silver king corn, it is delicious!
