New Beginnings
Although I love being in a regular routine, and by a routine I mean doing what I want when I want to; it still requires some preparation and commitment.
Going back to school doesn’t have to be a transitional nightmare. In fact, getting into a routine can be a welcome change and an ideal way to either begin a new and healthier lifestyle or continue where you left off.
I am not a big fan of resolutions because it gives one the permission to postpone taking care of business. I realize, however, for some it is necessary. There are a few easy ways to plan for that perfect day that marks the beginning of a healthier you.
First I recommend you use a calendar to record the day, time and mode of exercise planned for the following week. Try for at least 4 days of exercise, 45 minutes each day. Stick to it!
Also you should keep a food journal. I have probably mentioned food journaling a dozen times as an effective method of tracking eating habits. If you are pushed for time, just write down the foods that you suspect are unhealthy and research the nutritional content later when you have more time. This may be a good place to record your weight and/or fitness goals as well.
Lastly, don’t be a martyr and bring work home. Voluntarily suffering from working too much will not win you any extra kudos. Those that sacrifice family time, health and happiness are only hurting themselves.
When you leave work, or step out of your home office at the end of the day, don’t revisit it. Try to resist business calls, emails and other distractions in the evening time as well.
Of course I am acutely aware of how difficult this can be, especially during a recession. Find a balance that works for you and your family. That may mean getting up earlier or staying 30 minutes later to catch up on paperwork each day.
As summer vacation winds down, consider this an opportunity to begin a new routine. Prepare and schedule your workouts, keep a journal and resist working after hours.
