Piedmont Has Four New Teachers
Headmaster Tony Tanner kicked off the 2012-2013 school year with five new faculty members to join the ranks at Piedmont Academy.
Misty Burton’s hometown is Colonial Heights, Va. She taught sixth grade English at Byrd Middle School in Henrico, VA for four years. Prior to that, she was a homebound teacher for sick or expelled students in the county for two years. At Byrd Middle School, she sponsored the FCA, Destination Imagination, and the forensics club.
Ms. Burton is an Alumni of Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor’s of English and a Master’s of Teaching.
She said, “God is so good that He has transplanted my family here in Georgia. I truly believe God’s hand is guiding my family, and has poured His grace and mercy over us.” Ms. Burton will teach high school English at PAC.
Serena Cain grew up in Forest Park. Ms. Cain earned a teaching degree at Clayton State University. She is currently in the graduate program at the UGA Griffin campus earning her Masters in Middle School Mathematics Education. She and her family reside in Locust Grove. Ms. Cain will be teaching middle school mathematics and science.
Catherine Jones, a 32 year veteran high school teacher of the Fayette County school system, has taught English, speech communications, debate, broadcast journalism, and film studies. She holds a Masters of Education in English, Communications, Speech Communications and her bachelor’s degree was earned in Speech Communications, all from University of Georgia and Georgia State University.
During her educational career, Ms. Jones has received numerous awards and honors including Atlanta Journal and Constitution, “Georgia Honor Teacher of the Year,” Turner Broadcasting System and Georgia Business Forum, “Georgia Super Teacher” award; Georgia Department of Education, “Teacher of the Year, Semi-finalist;” Radio Shack’s, “National Outstanding Teacher” award, and NASA, “1st place Advisor, Aeronautics and Space Science Journalism.” Ms. Jones will be teaching English and Latin in high school. She resides in Jasper County.
Jennifer Sanders is originally from Warner Robins, however, she has lived in Jackson for the last 10 years. Ms. Sanders graduated from Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Early Childhood. Most recently, she has taught in the pre-school program at Sonshine Dayschool of Macedonia Baptist Church in Jackson.
She resides in Jackson with her husband, Lane, and three children. Ms. Sanders said, “I am very excited to be joining the Piedmont family and look forward to a great year.” Ms. Sanders will be teaching four-year-old kindergarten this year.
Sarah Wagnon, a member of Piedmont Academy’s Class of 2008 and class salutatorian, attended the University of Georgia and graduated with honors. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs.
Ms. Wagnon will be teaching high school Spanish, SAT/College prep, journalism, and will advise the high school Y-Club. She is from Covington.
