I’m Fixing to Reflect on a Few Things

I’m fixing to reflect on a few things.

I know–I know, I should have written this back during the holidays, but I’m not as punctual to conditions and situations in life as might have been expected of me in the past.

That’s correct, I’ve slowed down a bit. Instead of riding my hoss and shooting my gun, these days I tend to be riding my recliner and using my remote to shoot the channels on TV.

I thought about writing something about Christmas and New Year’s back during the holiday period, but I declined due to the fact that everyone else was and your voice gets lost in the host of them, not to mention the hustle and bustle.

But now the coast is clear and it leads me to a few reflections, so here goes:

In ancient times it was forbidden to fight in the presence of mistletoe. Maybe we should display it year round.

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was published on December 17, 1843, exactly 100 years before I was born.

In the movie, Miracle on 34th Street, in 1947, the case against Kris Kringle was dismissed on Christmas Eve. I bet you had forgotten that.

The first appearance of Bullwinkle the Moose in the Macy’s Christmas Parade, and the narration of the story of Frosty the Snowman by Jimmy Durante, both happened in 1961. I also graduated from high school that year.

Nancy Wilson recorded Merry Christmas Baby in 1968. One of the lines in it went like this: “It’s that time of the year when the world falls in love.” Elvis recorded it later, too.

In 1985 the Care Bears were the number one selling Christmas item. I wonder what it was this past year?

In 2001 the Mannheim Steamroller recorded, Do You Hear What I Hear.” See there, something wonderful has happened in this century!

Reflections, as opposed to projections, teaches us that the wonderful sounds and settings of the past far out weigh anything we can be fixing to imagine in the future.
