Six Weeks to Svelte
It comes every year like clockwork. The weather threatens to get warmer and we panic. Even though we have known this day would come; we still act as if it was a total surprise.
There are 6 weeks left of winter. Some fear warmer weather and skin revealing styles will expose fitness failures. Don’t wait – take inventory of the damage by putting on a summer outfit or bathing suit. Prepare to spend the last weeks of winter fixing it with fitness or fashion.
Unfortunately there are no miracle cures for weight loss I can offer, and if someone tries, run fast in the opposite direction. I would be remiss in my intentions, however, if I didn’t suggest eating less and exercising more for the most effective way of meeting those fitness goals. With 6 weeks until spring, there is still plenty of time. *See last 2 years of articles for ways to lose weight.
For those that are not able or willing to lose weight, or are healthy but want a style update for spring, I’ve included a few practical fashion tips that can make you appear thinner and look younger.
Women are so fortunate right now because fashion is more diverse than ever. Everything is in. Empire waisted shirts, skinny jeans and ankle length dresses can all be appropriately worn with boots! Also, if you don’t have pop of color – POC – in your wardrobe, get some. A lightweight scarf, bright t-shirt or a flashy accessory can update your look and brighten your mood.
If you are wearing something too tight it isn’t making you look smaller. It is actually doing quite the opposite. Clothing should never be binding, show bulging or cause pain. Never opt for oversized clothing that hides either; that can make you appear larger than you are. Always wear clothes that fit and are appropriate for your body type.
For men it may be more difficult to camouflage flaws unless they actually wear camo. Most men with weight issues carry it in their mid-section which causes belt placement to move from the hip bone area to places further south. To accommodate for a protruding belly and to prevent “plumber pants”, consider elastic waisted slacks.
I wish I had more attractive options for the fellows, but the truth is if you are most comfortable in a track suit, I recommend you actually go on down to the track and walk it off! Four to five days of 40-50 minutes of fast walking will melt the belly pounds quickly. Curb the carbs for quicker results.
Women, if you are larger in the rump, you may opt for a bathing suit with a skirt. Many designers are also including extra support for firming in the rear. Don’t forget, a round bottom is in; just look at Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. Consider it an asset and accentuate it. As long as it is G-rated and nothing inappropriate is hanging out, then it passes the test.
You may be challenged to find shorts with the correct waist size to accommodate for room in the trunk. In this case you may have to purchase the larger size and have the waist taken up for a more fitted look.
If you’re thicker in the middle, the bathing suit for you is a tankini. Choose one with an A-line or peplum skirt to give the appearance of a smaller waist. To look more proportional, a skirt may work better than a brief. One-piece styles will also work with a built in tummy tightener.
Shorts that are hip-slung are a better choice for hiding tummy fat. Just remember, we don’t want to see an exposed belly or muffin tops, so choose an empire waisted shirt with a little flare to fall at or just below the hips.
Even in warm weather, jeans are in. Not Your Daughter’s Jeans brand, are stylish and suitable for women over 50 who don’t appreciate junior fashions. Long, boot-legged, darker denim styles are most slimming especially if worn with a sandal or pump that has a small heel.
Tank tops are almost required on hot, humid days. Even if your arms are not perfectly sculpted, try it. Look for tanks with small arm holes so that undergarments are not exposed. Also, the straps should be wide so that you can wear real support underneath. Tank tops are fun for all ages so choose cool prints and fabrics that drape. For added flair, or to conceal excess weight, pair with a lightweight fitted blazer and a colorful, sheer scarf.
Guys, be cautious when wearing tank tops. Again, I wish I had better news but tank tops for guys should be limited to those that have some semblance of muscle tissue in the upper body area. With six weeks to go, start a daily push-up regimen. You will see noticeable results within weeks.
Finally, regardless of your weight, don’t stay inside. The sun fuels the body with vitamins and helps to reduce symptoms of depression. If you are outside, it is more likely you will sweat which cleanses pores and vital organs and keeps you fit. If you don’t want to be seen, stay in your own yard. Cutting grass, pulling weeds, trimming hedges or walking the dog can all be done in private.
I do suggest, however, that if you are bound to your home in the summer because you are ashamed of how you look, it is time to make a change. Don’t miss out on another season of hot and healthy Georgia sunshine!
