Go Girls!

Hey, girls, tomorrow, March 8th, is International Woman’s Day and March is National Women’s History Month. And do we have a history? Nearly 100 years ago the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified giving the vote to everyone regardless of sex. Georgia finally got around to voting for this amendment in 1970, but never fear Mississippi waited until 1984.

Mostly forgotten, Alice Paul, Lucy Burns, Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were the leaders of the national suffrage movement. Our own Margaret Mitchell’s mother marched in Atlanta for the cause.

My mother was the first in our family to leave the farm and take a job. She was a Rosey, the Riveter at the Fisher Aircraft Plant during World War II. She told me that on the day the war ended she was working and an announcement over the loud speaker in the plant said, “Lay down your tools, go home, your check will be mailed to you.” That was a fine how-do-you-do.

Now, women in the workplace, military, and even politics is not a rarity. We even have a woman representing Jasper County in the Georgia House of Representatives, go Susan Holmes! And this paper is owned by a woman, Kathy Mudd.

Go, girls!
