American Legion Spruce-Up
The American Legion Post 110 building at the intersection of Eatonton and Washington Streets on the east side of Monticello has gotten a facelift recently, compliments of The Home Depot. Fred Paul, Legion Commander, contacted The Home Depot Foundation some time ago about the needs at the building. For example, although it houses an organization for veterans, it had no handicap access.
So, that was one of the first items. Next, the building had been sitting there for a long time, and things wear out. The building needed a new roof. It got one. Lastly, other work was needed inside the building, particularly upgrades to the kitchen, and the building got those too. Team Depot volunteers joined members and friends of the American Legion earlier this month to get the work done. In the photo above, Mr. Paul watches as the Team Depot volunteers cut wood for the project, while other volunteers look over the kitchen area. Now the building boasts handicap access, a refurbished kitchen, and a fresher look all around.
The building is open each Wednesday as a gathering place to visit, and oftentimes there are resources there to help people with various items such as taxes, insurance, and such. The group as a whole meets monthly. The Legion has a color guard which handles flag raisings in various locations. It is planning a veteran’s appreciation day in June, complete with a parade, and many other activities are coming about to make use of the facility.
