WRECKS ABOUND

Monticello police responded to five reports of automobile accidents in the last week, and the sheriff’s department responded to a dozen more. In the top photo, a tractor-trailer overturned in the rain Sunday just south of the Earth Pak facility.

The report by the Georgia State Patrol on the overturned 2008 Freightliner driven by Tony Mallory of Macon was incomplete at press time. City police investigated two three-vehicle accidents a block apart on West Washington Street last Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, traffic headed east on West Washington Street extended for some distance. Stacy Wynell Whitlock, driving a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling east on West Washington Street. Brenda W. Pope of Barnesville, was traveling north on Church Street in a 2002 Honda Accord. Barry William Darnell of Macon was traveling south on Church Street in a 2009 Ford Taurus. Apparently, there was a gap in the traffic at the intersection, so Ms. Pope attempted to drive across West Washington Street, continuing on Church Street. However, in doing so, she pulled out in front of Ms. Whitlock, and the two cars collided, knocking Ms. Pope’s car into the sidewalk and Ms. Whitlock’s car into Mr. Darnell’s vehicle. No one was seriously injured. Ms. Pope was charged with failure to yield right-of-way.

On Friday, Margie Sanders, driving a 2003 Nissan Altima, was traveling east on West Washington St., and ran the red light, striking Brian Blanchett who was driving a silver 2003 Honda Civic and traveling south on Forsyth Street, according to a report from the Georgia State Patrol. When Mr. Blanchett’s vehicle was struck, it rotated and struck the 2013 GMC Terrain which was in the northbound lane of Forsyth Street at the light, waiting to make a left turn. Paul Fowler was driving the GMC Terrain.
