Piedmont Defeats Monticello In Summer Play

In a somewhat unique match-up, Piedmont Academy’s summer league baseball team defeated Monticello 8-2 Tuesday afternoon.

Mac Brittain earned the win after pitching the first three innings with Zach Beggs handling the final four frames.

“Both of them did a really good job,” Piedmont coach Danny Camp said.

Zack Wilson had a two-run double while Malcom Tyler, Mike Weatherly, Beggs and Brittain also drove in runs.

“We are excited about our summer schedule,” Camp said. “We practiced Monday and then were on the field Tuesday for a game. Summer is about getting our returning players experience. Some of our players are also competing for other teams this summer and that will only help give them more experience.”

Piedmont’s coach said it was the first time he had a team compete against Monticello and it was a fun experience.

“We have a lot of respect for their program,” Camp said. “We are just trying to get better and work through some things for next year. We believe we have a lot of room for improvement.”

During 2013, Piedmont’s defense and pitching were solid, but Camp said, at times, the offense struggled.

“We just need to work on scoring more runs,” the coach said. “We would put runners on base (this past season) but often had trouble bringing them home. This summer we are focusing on situational aspects and hope to make improvements for next spring.”

Piedmont was scheduled to play Stratford Wednesday in summer league play and will host Monticello for a doubleheader on Thursday, June 20 at 5 p.m. The Cougars will then host Central Fellowship at 11 a.m. and Brentwood at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 21.
