Appreciation Program for Veterans Set Saturday

The American Legion Post 110 in Monticello is hosting a Veterans Appreciation Day, complete with a parade at noon, this Saturday, June 15.

The Legion post will hold a flag raising ceremony on the Square at 9 a.m. during the Market on the Square.

The Market will continue as usual until noon, but many vendors will stay late in anticipation of the parade watchers.

The parade will start at noon at Thomas Persons Hall, 319 College Street, go down College to West Washington, then up Washington to Southern Avenue where it will travel to East Greene Street, turn left and continue back across the Square and back to the Hall.

World War II veterans who are members of the American Legion post, Chick Wilson, Army, John Bassett, Alvin Craven and Phil Jordan, Navy and Roy Kelly, Army Air Force, will serve as Grand Marshals of the parade and ride in cars, and any other World War II veterans in attendance are asked to ride on the float that will be provided by the American Legion.

After the parade, there will be a program in honor of the veterans. Chaplain Sandra Shockley will give the invocation, and Monticello Mayor Bryan Standifer will welcome everyone. Then, Post 110 Commander Fred Paul will welcome everyone, and guest speakers will be State Sen. Burt Jones, State Rep. Susan Holmes, Cissy Benton, executive director of the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce, retired veteran and former state senator John Douglas, and the District 10 Commander.

Mrs. Shockley and Les Steele will play Taps during a flag retirement ceremony.
