Summer Diamond Cougars Continue to Win

Piedmont Academy’s summer league baseball squad entered this week at 4-0 overall following three victories last week.

The Cougars recorded wins last week against Monticello (12-3), Central Fellowship (4-3) and Brentwood (7-2). Coach Danny Camp said he has been pleased with how his players have performed in June.

“We are playing well,” the coach said. “It’s been a time for all coaches to work on some things. We’ve done a good job of moving runners over. We have played solid baseball this summer. It has been nice to see.”

The win against Brentwood came against the two-time defending AA champions.

“Brentwood threw two of their better pitchers against us,” Camp said. We are addressing some things we need to do this summer. We try to win each inning. Even if it’s 1-0, you are going to win.”

One key for Piedmont this summer which should benefit the team next spring has been pitching depth. Zach Beggs, Mac Brittain, Jacob Younker, Michael Davis and Luke Andrews have all seen time on the pitcher’s mound this summer.

Andrews went the distance against Brentwood while Davis, a new player in the program, pitched six strong innings against Central Fellowship. Younker, returning from injury, earned the win against Monticello. Brittain closed the door against Monticello and Central Fellowship.

“I am pleased with where we are at,” Camp said. “I am excited about what our possibilities are. We still have room for improvement. Our players will continue to work on the field and in the weight room.”

The summer league team began a doubleheader against Stratford Academy Tuesday afternoon, but the event was called due to weather conditions in the fourth inning with the Cougars leading 4-0.

The teams were scheduled to play two five-inning contests. The games will not be rescheduled, Camp said.

Piedmont will host the Middle Georgia Patriots for a doubleheader Monday at 5 p.m. The teams will play two five-inning contests.
