Holiday Festivities To Be Held

INDEPENDENCE DAY CONCERT—2012

The Jasper County Historical Foundation welcomes everyone to a local Independence Day celebration on Thursday, July 4, on the lawn of Thomas Persons Hall.

The Monticello Community Band will present its seventh annual Independence Day concert at 7 p.m. at the 319 College Street property in Monticello.

Across from the football field and on the lawn of a historic school, the free concert includes marches of the Armed Forces, readings from the Declaration of Independence with Lin McKnight, and a patriotic sing-along led by Bobbi Sauls.

In the event of severe weather, the concert will move indoors into the Thomas Persons Hall auditorium. All those attending should take lawn chairs or a blanket, even if the event is held indoors.

Tours of the building will be available during the picnic time. Newly renovated bathrooms will also be available to concert attendees. Parents are asked not to permit children to enter the building without adult supervision.

A children’s sidewalk and pet parade will begin prior to the concert at 6:45. Crafts will also be available for children.

Children between the ages of two and 10 and owners of companion animals are invited to register at the Snap’n Turtle children’s store in downtown Monticello.

Everyone who registers and participates will be entered to win a $50 Snap’n Turtle gift certificate.  Rules and more information are available at the store, and all entries must register by July 3.  An award will be given for the best “float.”

In addition to the parade and the concert, the public is invited to set up tables and chairs and bring a picnic dinner at 6 p.m.  Recorded music will play, and tables will be judged for the best theme, most red, white and blue, and most over the top.  Also, the picnic and parade will only take place if outside, so tents and umbrellas are encouraged.  If there is severe weather, only the concert will be indoors.

Maw Maw’s Place, Heartland Clinic of Chiropractic and Candice Mock Massage are sponsoring the table-decoration contest.

In addition, the Jasper County Historical Foundation will be selling desserts and will also provide information on its restoration of the 319 College Street property.

The American Legion will also raise the flag prior to the concert, and 7 p.m.

Performing band members include clarinets Kim Savage, Katrina Walker, David Haisten, Linda Jordan and Faith Vaughn, bass clarinet Les Steele, flutes Christy Bailey, Chelsea Kamplain, Mary Camp, Megan Kamplain, Regis Marie Stamey and Anna Grace Parker, and trumpets Chris Savage, Clay Evans, Sandra Shockley, Jimmy Jordan and Matthew Jernigan.
