Football Cougars Look to New Season

Piedmont Academy’s football team is continuing its summer workout schedule and will begin official on-the-field preseason practice Monday.

The first workout will be in helmets with players adding shoulder pads and other equipment in coming days. Full contact work is set for August 5, when Piedmont will host camp week with two practices each day along with film sessions.

“It’s been a good summer,” coach Rhett Farmer said. “We’ve had to work inside some with all the rain we’ve had.”

Farmer said the team will take part in a preseason scrimmage against Covenant Academy Friday, Aug. 9, at home.

One change to the regular season schedule will be the October 25 date. The opponent will now be Community Christian after Arlington announced it will not field a football team this season.

Community Christian is filling the scheduled dates for Arlington this fall and will be eligible to win the region title and qualify for the state playoffs. Once realignment and schedules are made for 2014-2015, Community Christian may be placed in a higher classification.

“They will be a formidable opponent,” Farmer said of Community Christian.

The Cougars open the 2013 season Friday, Aug. 23, against Westwood at 7:30 p.m. at home. The following Friday, Aug. 30, we’ll see the team travel to Dublin to battle Trinity Christian, also at 7:30 p.m.

The complete schedule can be seen on the school’s website, www.piedmontacademy.com.

The Monticello News will cover each of the Cougars’ games, so be sure to subscribe to The News to keep up with your team.
