BICYCLIST KILLED

Herschel Richard of Monticello died Friday, Aug. 16, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon where he was taken after being involved in an accident on Monday, Aug. 12.

Mr. Richard was riding his bicycle on Aikenton Road near Shady Dale, when he was struck by a 1996 Dodge Ram pick-up truck being driven by Chelsea Guthrie, also of Monticello. According to a report from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), both Mr. Richard and Ms. Guthrie were traveling north on Aikenton Road.

Ms. Guthrie became distracted and failed to see Mr. Richard, striking the rear of the bicycle. He was airlifted to the Macon hospital where he died Friday. No charges have been filed, and the accident is still under investigation, according to a spokesman for the GSP.
