‘Canes Kick Off Season Friday
The ’Canes kick off their 2013 season tomorrow night, Friday, Aug. 30 at Rose Bowl Field versus non-region foe Morgan County.
The Bulldogs went 8-2 last year during the regular season and lost a close game in the second round of the playoffs to North Hall. They picked up their first win last year at the expense of the ‘Canes who traveled to Madison and were defeated 34-6.
The ‘Canes, who had difficulty scoring points last year, and only averaged 10 points a game, may have reached a turning point. In their recent scrimmage game versus East Jackson they put 55 points on the board.
The same may be said about the ‘Cane defense which shut out East Jackson, while last year they gave up an average of 32 points a game.
Head Football Coach Eddie Roberts said, “We played a lot of freshmen and younger players last year and they have grown up some with a year of experience under their belt, and they are playing with more confidence. Their work in our weight room has also helped, and what we’re doing offensively is a lot of fun to them. We have brought in a spread offense where we throw the ball around a lot. We threw 38 times in our scrimmage game.
“The defense depends a lot on the offense. Last year our offense went three-and-out a lot which resulted in our defense having to get right back on the field. One thing I noticed in our scrimmage game was there was a lot of positive things going on. The kids played with more confidence. I think when you’re more successful on offense it makes you better on defense. We have a good bit of speed on our defense and our kids are bigger and stronger.
“This group is a good bunch of kids who care about each other and about winning and losing–it means something to them.”
Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
