Council Post Is Contested
Qualifying for two seats on the Monticello City Council, and the mayoral post ended last Thursday with no surprises, and only one contested race.
Incumbent Randy Strozier who currently occupies the District 2, Post 1 council seat qualified for re-election, making the District 2, Post 1 seat the only contested election expected.
David Wease, as he had announced, qualified early in the week as a candidate for that council seat.
Likewise, incumbent Larry Thurman qualified for the District 1, Post 1 position.
Mayor Bryan Standifer also qualified for re-election.
The Mayor Pro-tem post and Post 2 in both districts were elected to four year terms, while the others were elected to two year terms so stagger the election cycles and avoid ever having all brand new council members.
Bobby Jacobs is mayor pro-tem; Cornell Williams is the councilman in the District 1 Post 2 seat, and Katherine Alexander holds the District 2, Post 2 seat.
