HOLIDAY WEEKEND WRECKS

The Labor Day holiday weekend and traffic woes that accompany holidays started a little early in Monticello when Gail Sealy failed to yield when crossing West Washington Street on Church Street, always a busy intersection on Friday afternoon.
Mrs. Sealy’s car was badly damaged, but she said she was not hurt, just had an abrasion from the seat belt and some soreness. The accident actually occurred too early to be considered a holiday weekend accident, as it happened before 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, when the holiday weekend officially begins.
However, on Saturday, Aug. 31, thoroughly into the holiday weekend, Jasperite David Bassett wrecked his Nissan 300-ZX on Jackson Lake Road, and was killed. According to Trooper Patrick Prossser of the Georgia State Patrol, who is investigating the accident, Mr. Bassett lost control of his car in a sharp curve. He over-corrected, and as he was coming back on the road, he flipped the vehicle two or three times. Mr. Bassett was not wearing his seat belt, said the trooper, and was ejected from the car which had T-tops.
