‘Canes Shut Out Social Circle
As the ‘Canes began last Friday night with their traditional Hurricane Walk one could tell that the ‘Canes were in for a win, as they came out determined and motivated to beat the Social Circle Redskins.
The Redskins started off the game with the ball. Not even 10 seconds into the game, Garrison Williams made a huge sack on Social Circle’s quarterback. The Redskins were eventually forced to punt. With 9:49 remaining in the first quarter, quarterback Jacob Cavender completed a pass to Quincy Standifer, and Standifer took it to the house for 38 yards. The ‘Canes were up 6-0.
Later in the first, the ‘Canes played great defense, and with 6:40 remaining, Jordan Stewart deflected a pass on 2nd and 10. The Redskins were forced to punt. Lane Thomas caught a deep punt on the 17 yard line. And Thomas took it all the way back 82 yards with just over six minutes left in the first quarter, making the score, 12-0, ‘Canes.
Later in the first hour ‘Canes were forced to punt, the Redskins waved for a fair catch and dropped the ball. With outstanding hustle from the freshman Jay Johnson, he recovered the ball, giving the ’Canes the ball with great field position. With 2:44 remaining in the first, Cavender threw the ball towards the end zone and Thomas went and got it. The ‘Canes have scored again; the score now reads 20-0.
You would think that the score would satisfy the ‘Canes, being only the first quarter. But not so much, Diquan Johnson intercepts a pass and scores a touchdown with just under 20 seconds, wrapping up the first quarter with your ‘Canes 26 and the Redskins 0.
To start the 2nd quarter the Redskins were forced to punt; Thomas made a great return, returning the ball to the 27 yard line. Just a minute into the second quarter, Deraney completed a short pass to Standifer, and Standifer stepped into the end zone. With 9 minutes remaining in the half, Cavender completed another touchdown pass to Walt McMichael for 33 yards.
Almost two minutes later, Jordan Stone punched it into the end zone for another ‘Canes touchdown. With three early touchdowns in the secod quarter your score is 44-0 ‘Canes. Wrapping up the second quarter, running back Tra Jackson took it to the house for 42 yards. The score was 50-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the younger ‘Canes took over the field and played great defense and held the Redskins scoreless in the third.
With 2:41 left in the game, quarterback Mathew Hollis called his own number and headed for the end zone, giving the ‘Canes their last touchdown of the evening. The final score reads ‘Canes 56, Social Circle 0.
Sophomore quarterback Jacob Cavender said, “It was a great game, we executed well on offense and defense, but we still have things to work on before Jackson.”
Head Coach Eddie Roberts said, “We had a great game, showed a lot of team effort, very confident, but we have some work to do on special teams to prepare for Jackson.”
