Lady Cougars Earn Region WIn
Piedmont Academy’s softball team defeated Central Fellowship 9-5 in region action Tuesday.
The road win improved the Lady Cougars to 15-8-1 overall and 3-3 in Region 4-AA.
Piedmont stepped out of region play Monday with a 3-1 win against John Milledge on the road.
It was also a busy stretch for the Lady Cougars last week. Piedmont swept a doubleheader against Mt. de Sales on September 11 with 8-3 and 16-1 non-region victories.
The team ran into some trouble with back-to-back Region 4-AA games Thursday and Friday falling to Flint River 7-1 and Windsor 4-2.
“Flint River is a good team,” coach Danny Camp said. “We didn’t come through when we had runners in scoring position. Against Windsor, we allowed one big inning which hurt us. We had some missed chances again.”
Those region losses were games “we couldn’t afford to lose,” the coach said.
“We are now out of the picture as far as winning region,” Camp said. “We have to regroup and claw and hope to finish third. That still means we will be on the road for the first round of state.”
Region 4-AA is still one of the state’s toughest, Camp said.
In the game against Flint River, Morgan Tillman was 2-for-3 at the plate while Taylor Swart had an RBI double. Cheyenne Galloway was 2-for-4 offensively while Amelia Dodson was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
In the close loss to Windsor, Piedmont actually had more hits than the Lady Knights. O’Neil Sealy had a single and two doubles and an RBI. Matti Smith was 1-for-3 while Galloway was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Haley Tyler was also 1-for-3.
Piedmont will play at LaGrange today, Sept. 19, for a region contest at 5 p.m. before traveling to Gatewood Monday, Sept. 23, for a non-region contest at 4:30 p.m.
