Brrr…it’s cold
Brrr, it’s cold.
The opening of 2014 reminds us Georgians that the weather can do some tremendous flip-flops in our great state.
Single-digit temperatures on Tuesday morning, and later in the week, the weatherman is calling for highs in the 60s; welcome to Georgia.
As many of you are aware, The News office is in a 100+ year old building, which, by definition, means it has no insulation. We have space heaters and window units to heat and cool the place. And, they do a reasonable job, most of the time.
However, these cold temps are no match for our antiquated heaters. Heck, I don’t think my much more modern heater at home has cut off lately. It was running when I got home after county commission Monday evening, even though my husband had a fire in the fireplace.
Watching some of the football games in cold climates in the last week or so all I could think was I’m glad I’m not there. But, I’m sure they sell different coats there than they do here.
I rarely put my overcoat on…what to go from the house to the truck or the truck to the office…it’s not worth it. And, it’s too bulky to drive in. That is, until it’s single digits outside. Then, I learn to drive in a coat.
It was so cold, many area school systems closed for the day Tuesday. I think they couldn’t bear the thought of the little children freezing at the bus stop. Or, they may have been afraid these Georgia buses would not crank in single digit weather. I suspect once they got to school, many of them would be warmer than at home, because there are a lot of homes around like my office…cold.
But, by the time you read this, the single digits will be a memory, and if 2014 progresses like 2013, it will be raining again.
We still have two or more months where there is a chance for bitter cold, and we may even get some frozen precipitation. Then it will be spring, again.
