Cat in the Hat Visits Town; Prepares for Suess on the Loose

Everyone is invited to join in the fun this Saturday, March 1, at Jasper County High School, 14477 Hwy. 11 north, for Seuss On The Loose, a literacy festival to benefit Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy.

Tickets can be purchased for 50 cents each to visit any of the 18 activity booths for children to play games or to get a chance to win items such as a Kindle or Nook E-Reader, or to get a hot dog or a hamburger or a bottle of water.

Booths will be based on Dr. Seuss books and book characters will be in costume. Everyone is invited to take part in the book character costume contest.

And, wearing a costume for the costume contest earns contestants a free ticket. A donation of $28 pays for a child for a year AND the donor gets a t-shirt.

All proceeds from the event go to Ferst Foundation which mails a book each month to registered children in Jasper County. They receive a book every month from birth to age five.

The accompanying photos show the Cat in the Hat discussing Saturday’s menu at Food Pride (top photo); the Cat with the youngest registrant, Davis Perry, born just two weeks ago. His sister Marie, has been receiving books and wants her baby brother to receive them also. Mom is Belle Stork Perry.

A child registered at birth receives a library of 60 books before the age of five—all free.

The bottom photo shows the Cat thanking Mary Murphy at the Monticello Post Office for postal workers delivering around 300 books per month.
