Garage Sales

It’s about time for spring cleaning, airing out and getting rid of stuff. And it’s also time for garage sale signs to be plastered all over the place every weekend.

Call it a garage sale, a yard sale, a rummage sale, where there’s something to be had by all, treasures lingering under a layer of dust or paint. Stories abound of an original Derth Wilson bought for only a $1 and worth millions.

Yard sailoring is not for the inexperienced. Indeed, there are websites giving tips to succeeding at the hunt. Those weekend bargain hunters need to heed tips like wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen and bring your own shopping bag. Don’t forget to thoroughly examine garage sale items for say bullet holes or a stamp stating, “This book belongs to Jasper County Library.”

Parting is such sweet sorrow as the old saying goes, but on the other hand, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” Keep in mind the real old saying, “Caveat emptor.” Latin for “Buyer beware” or optimistically, buyer be aware of the bargains you’re going to get. As is means just that.

My mother, aka Queen of the Yardsales, was notorious for selling the chair you were sitting in. Talk about being aware, never accidentally leave anything at her house, it would be sitting on a table in the front yard that weekend. Has anyone seen my beige raincoat?

The Monticello News usually has several garage sales listed most weekends. Mark your calendars for the yearly Turtle Cove Community Sale on Friday, April 11th and Saturday, April 12th. Pick up a handy map at the clubhouse. Also, the City of Monticello’s community wide yard sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 3. Happy hunting!
