DeWayne Sorrells Completes Advanced Jet Flight Training
1st Lieutenant Danny DeWayne Sorrells a native of Shady Dale, completed Advanced Jet Flight training and was designated as a Naval Aviator.
The ceremony marked the culmination of nearly two years of specialized training which prepares Navy and Marine Corps officers for the rigorous demands of aerial combat and carrier operations; earning them the title of “Naval Aviator” and the right to wear the coveted “Wings of Gold.”
1st LT. Sorrells is a 2003 graduate of Jasper County High and a 2010 graduate of Auburn University and has been in the Marine Corps for 10 years. He has served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also received notice that he is being awarded a promotion to the rank of Captain.
1st Lt. Sorrells will be moving his family to Cherry Point, N.C. where he will be flying the Marines Prowler Jet.
1st LT. Sorrells is married to the former Laurie Spitler of Newborn. They have one daughter, 15 months old Cora Regan Sorrells, and a son due in July. 1st Lt. Sorrells is the son of Pastor and Mrs. Danny Sorrells of Rutledge.
1st. Lt. Sorrells was the guest speaker at Shiloh Baptist Church Sunday. In a special service he honored all veterans and also remembered those that had made the ultimate sacrifice in the giving of their life during battle. He did a special tribute to three of his platoon members who died in Iraq while serving.
“Whenever you enlist into the Armed Forces, you basically sign a blank check. It can mean giving your life to fulfill the obligation of the check,” said the soon-to-be captain.
