Summer Garden

With the tomatoes and cucumbers that every Southerner is required by tradition to plant every year, it’s about time for the harvest to start coming in.

With a fresh-from-the-garden tomato and cucumber, we can make a tasty meal. Slather, don’t you just love that word, slather?

Slather some mayonnaise on white bread, slice the tomato pretty thick and plop it into mayonnaise, salt and pepper, voila, you’re done. The cucumber sliced and salted is a side dish. Add a cold glass of sweet tea and you are my hero.

Summer meals are always pretty simple since no one wants to heat up the kitchen or wait too long to eat. Now is the time when men excel with culinary talents, crank up that grill and let’s get to grillin’. Hamburgers and hot dogs are number one in most families. Easy to make, serve and eat.

Another summer time treat is ice cream. Whether it’s hand cranked in the ice cream maker, dream on, some from the grocery store or from the DQ, everyone screams for ice cream.

Being with family and friends, eating some good chow, trying to sing karaoke, soaking up the sunshine, paddling around in a pool or lake, it’s all good in the good ole summertime.
