After completing the 21-day meditation challenge hosted by Oprah Winfrey and delivered by Deepak Chopra – I’m certain I have it all figured out. Just a few weeks of quieting the mind and voila! Like magic, my heart is full and my spirit renewed.

Of course I’m kidding. If someone boasts that after 21 days of anything—they have been totally transformed, it’s not real. Although I’ll admit I am not totally healed, I have certainly enjoyed the beginnings of something healthier.

For those that read each week regardless of what personal musings I provide —thank you. For those that are desperately waiting for some real practical advice on eating right and exercising— I’m sorry. I realize I’ve gone off on a tangent the last few months.

With absolutely no qualifications, my heart is leading me to encourage readers to go deeper than the physical health that we all desire. Instead, and as Oprah might say, to achieve change of any kind, we need to start in the basement.

By delving into what really makes us tick, we can find glimpses of peace and contentment; only then can real change occur—physical, mental or emotional. I promise I will continue to offer the latest in fitness and food—but until then, if you continue to struggle with the same health concerns year after year— maybe you have made your home in the basement—never to ascend to higher ground.

Perhaps your next step should be to answer some difficult questions like: Why do you overeat? When did you start neglecting yourself? What role model are you following? Do you have a role model? Where does your pain come from?

Start today to find ways to expand your potential through meditation/prayer, counseling or other sources. Until you can get to the root of the problem, you may never achieve total wellness—from the basement to the roof top.
