Bad Sports Weekend
Last weekend was a bad weekend. For those of you who do not already know, I am a big sports fan. I’m particularly fond of the Atlanta Braves…and yes, I watch as many of the 162 games they play as feasible, which means a lot.
I’m also a football fan—our local high school teams, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Falcons.
That’s why it was a bad weekend.
First lightning ended the high school games prematurely. For Monticello, that means the Hurricanes got a loss. According to Coach Huff, once they started the third quarter, it counted as a game. So, it counts as a loss, even though we fans have every confidence that given the opportunity to complete the game, the ‘Canes would have prevailed.
Piedmont fared a little better, but still ended in an incomplete game. However they were tied at 14.
The Braves did no better Friday night. They lost to the worst team in the American League…by one run in a situation that has become all too common.
However, hope springs eternal, and the Braves were playing on Saturday, and the Georgia Bulldogs were going to beat South Carolina.
Well, any of you who are remotely sports fans know that Georgia did not beat South Carolina. And, the Braves fell to the Rangers, again.
Still, you have Sunday sports, and no I’m not really a race fan. But there’s more baseball and more football. Did I say hope spring eternal?
The Falcons, who were a huge disappointment last year are on the road to bigger and better things. And they’re playing the Bengals…in Cincinnati. For some reason, I was sure the Falcons would win. They didn’t.
And, the Braves didn’t just lose…they lost by a touchdown (did I mention it’s baseball).
So, it was not a good weekend at all. At this writing, I’m hoping the Braves will do whatever it takes to turn around this slump they’ve been in and learn to hit. After all, they’re facing the Nationals for the next three games. Big games.
In the past, the Braves have dominated the Nationals. Not so in September.
The announcers keep talking about them needing to have a closed door meeting, and someone step up and be the leader. But, I keep thinking they’re surely trying as hard as they can. The frustration has to be much worse for them than it is the fan, right? I’m certain they’re trying.
But, maybe the announcers are right. Or maybe they’ll just come together. I’m hoping for a Braves sweep of the Nats at the Ted. So, if I have a big smile on my face when you see me after you read this, it means the unlikely happened, and the Braves returned to their winning ways.
So, by the time you read this, regardless of what the Braves do, I’ll be ready to cheer my favorite teams on for another weekend. Go ‘Canes. Go ’Cougars. Go Dawgs, Rise Up Falcons, and let’s go Braves!
