Taking A Lot for Granted
On a recent trip we followed our route with a GPS and were reminded that paper maps are becoming a thing of the past. We tried to imagine our ancestors making their way West without the aid of even a map.
Remote controls for everything from televisions to ceiling fans have spoiled us. Gone are the days when the youngest kid was the designated channel changer for the television. Once upon a time there weren’t many channels for changing.
Today, we enjoy fresh lettuce year round from the Salinas Valley in California and fresh fruit from South America. We have grown accustomed to these foods year round when in the past they were only enjoyed during their harvest season.
Most everyone has an electronic leash these days. Cellphones seem like a necessity. The original cellphone that we owned was in a big, black leatherette bag with a handle and the battery was bigger than any cellphone today.
You are watching a movie on television and wonder who is in the cast. You turn to your laptop computer and in a manner of moments this information is yours. Remember the days when information like that was maybe at the library or if you were lucky your family had a set of encyclopedias.
We just take a lot for granted.
