Why Does God Love?
God loves you. You probably have heard that many times in your life. We sing it as children: “Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so.”
You may embrace and thank God for His love. You may not believe it and reject His love. God still loves you.
Have you ever wondered why God loves you?
We often have trouble receiving the love that God has for us. For some, pride is an issue in receiving His love. We think: “Of course He loves me. Do you know what I have done for Him? I’m in church every Sunday. I give regularly to the church and other great causes. I’m a good person. I try to live like I’m supposed to. How could He not love me?”
I hate to bust your bubble: God doesn’t love you for what you have done.
Others have trouble receiving God’s love for us because our sense of unworthiness makes us believe God could not love us. We think: “There is no way God could love me. Do you know what I’ve done? Do you know the mistakes I’ve made? Do you know how long I have been away from Him? God could not love someone like me.”
You need to hear: God’s love is not halted because of your past mistakes.
God loves us…not because of who we are but because of who He is. Twice in 1 John 4, this statement occurs: “God is love” (vs. 8 and 16). God does not love as a reaction to who we are. God loves because that is who He is. Our goodness doesn’t earn God’s love and our badness doesn’t negate God’s love. He loves because He is love. That is His character and His nature.
Do you think you are so great that God could not help but love you? Stop trying to earn God’s love and simply rest in the truth that He is love. The problem with earning God’s love is that sometimes we blow it. Does God stop loving us then? Nope. He is love.
Do you think you are so far gone that there is no way God could love someone like you? See the nature and character of God being love, and fall fully into His grace that loves you anyway. He is love.
God’s love is demonstrated most clearly in Jesus dying on the cross for us:
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8 NIV).
Question: “Why does God love me?” Answer: He loves me because He is love.
Better question: “How will I respond to His love?”
Your answer to that question matters eternally.
