Envirothon Team Excels

The Jasper County High School Envirothon team won first place in urban forestry, second in soils and placed third overall at the East Region Envirothon competition last week.

The team competed against 17 other teams, including last year’s state winner from Stephens County. The two teams from Stephens County placed first and second.

The students competed in five natural resources areas, including soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry and urban forestry. The team works together to answer each test, which may require students to identify trees or soil horizons, for example.

The team includes freshman Alina Jablonski, juniors Levi Ford and Cheyenne Elliott and seniors Emmi Wade, Tristan Armstrong and Christian Parr.

The region competition was held at Flinchum’s Phoenix in Athens, and by virtue of their overall score, the students will advance to the state competition to be held in Fort Valley the end of March.

The team is coached by science teacher Tyson Harty and local attorney Jehan El-Jourbagy with help from several local experts.
