Canes Undefeatead in Region
The Monticello Hurricane varsity baseball squad rounded out a week of action on the diamond with two region victories keeping them undefeated in region competition.
The varsity team hosted Bleckley Tuesday afternoon earning a 1-0 win. The one run earned in the first inning was the only one needed for the Canes to remain unscathed in the region so far.
Tyler Mote was on the mound with eight strikeouts and 14 first pitch strikes (FPS). Matthew Lawson had one hit, one walk, and two quality at bats (QABs). Stephen Arena had one hit and one QAB while Brelan Crowe had 2 QABs and Michael Wyatt, Jr. had one walk.
Last Friday, the team took out Lamar 10-0 at home. Mote was again on the mound earning five strikeouts and 14 FPS while also earning two hits and two runs batted in (RBIs). Lawson had two hits, one walk, two RBIs, and two QABs. Walt McMichael had two walks and three QABs. Arena had one walk, Wyatt had three RBIs, and Tony Shumate had two QABs.
The Canes suffered losses last Wednesday and Thursday to non-region foes Jackson and Luella. Against Luella the team fell 4-3. Chad Cain was on the mound and earned two strikeouts and 19 FPS. Arena had one hit and three QABs while Lawson had two hits, Garrett Scroggs had a walk, McMichael had one RBI.
Against Jackson, the varsity squad fell 10-6. The Canes started fast and furious earning five runs in the first inning and adding another in the second while holding Jackson to three but the win was not to be.
Wyatt was on the mound earning six strikeouts and 14 FPS. He also added three QABs to his statistics. Crowe had one RBI, Mote and McMichael each had two hits.
The varsity squad was to host Jones County Wednesday before resuming its six game home streak with region action against Northeast Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. The squad will get a bit of a break on Spring Break before returning to the diamond April 9 against region foe Putnam.
