Fall and Football

Fall and football, they just go together, but it just ain’t fittin’ to play football when it’s 90 degrees.

Football season used to be September through the end of November, now it starts in August and pushes into February at least for the professional teams.

Last Wednesday afternoon, the Jasper County Middle School Hurricanes met the Social Circle Redskins and on the first play, the Canes made a touchdown.

Not bad to start the season. There must have been several coaches in the stands as they continued to yell out plays and at players during the entire game. In the end the Canes were victorious.

Imagine one day one of these football players can tell someone that they played their first game in the Rose Bowl. Now that is impressive.

Tomorrow night Jasper County High School Hurricanes will be seeking their first win of the season. Piedmont Academy Cougars will be traveling to Athens for the win.

Yep, Friday night football under the lights is a great tradition in this country. Families, friends, fans come together to be a part of tradition. We all want to win.

Coach Vince Lombardi is attributed with saying, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing,” but he was not the first person to say that.

His teams did win enough that each year the Super Bowl champion receives the Vince Lombardi trophy.

These young players will never forget these games. The lessons they learn in sports will help them throughout their life, learning to compete, learning to work with others, having a willingness to succeed and win. Facing a complete stranger at the line of scrimmage for the first time can be a life changing experience.

Good luck to the players and many thanks to their coaches for helping develop good citizens! Come on, Monticello, support your teams.
