Pumpkin Time

Do you know your vegetables from your fruits and berries? Well, think again. Those orange pumpkins that are in the grocery and being sold at churches and road stands are technically fruits, but according to reliable sources, the pumpkin is actually a berry. You just learn new things everyday. Don’t you?

Pumpkins are everywhere this time of year. These vegetables, I mean fruits, I mean berries, are always associated with Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving. They come in a variety of colors and sizes with the big orange berries being the most popular.

Every kid needs to experience the fun of cutting open a pumpkin, scooping out the goop and seeds, and then cutting pieces out of the side to make eyes, nose and a jagged toothy mouth. These days there are special tools for this activity known as a Pumpkin Master Carving Kits. This kit replaces a plain knife and spoon used for generations.

The Pumpkin Master Carving Kit costs on average $29.91 and includes one scraper/scoop, a drill, a pouncing wheel, two saws and 12 signature patterns with tutorial video instructions. Thank goodness children are not allowed to simply create their own pumpkin faces and have that video tutorial to show them how-to.

Whether you pick a Hubbard, red Kuri, Tahitian Butternut, Baby Boo or a standard Aladdin Mini Turban, it’ll be fun for all to create a Jack-o-Lantern pumpkin, adding a candle that will flicker and welcome those who come by to Trick or Treat.

After the big night, Halloween, use your pumpkin as a planter, just add some dirt and some yellow pansies or mums.

Whenever it starts to rot, dig a hole and plant the whole thing, the mums will love it and the pansies will be around until next year.

Enjoy our beautiful Fall as our trees put on nature’s most beautiful show.
