Boy Scouts of America
Hello, everyone. No I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth, it’s just this page has been full lately with news from the state legislature, foster care news and more, letting me off the hook for writing a column.
But, alas, the legislature has adjourned, and even though I expect another installment for Rep. Susan Holmes, for sure, and possibly from Sen. Burt Jones, this is not the week. So, I thought I’d use this space to ask for help.
I have been selected…chosen…suckered into…something to head the local fund raising campaign for the Boy Scouts of America. I have some great helpers, but I don’t want to leave anyone out. So, I’m writing today to ask all those interested in helping to contact me, and I anticipate my inbox overflowing and my phone ringing off the hook (ha-ha).
Anyway, we are having a breakfast meeting on May 12, and the captains and myself are supposed to get about 90 people there. I’m sure many of you will be contacted personally, but as I said in an effort to be sure all interested are included, I’m writing this.
Please let me hear from you, 706-468-6511 or editor@themonticellonews.com.
Now, how did this happen. I know nothing about Boy Scouts…I have two daughters (yes a stepson, but I but I didn’t get him until he was grown).
This nice young man from the Macon office of the Boy Scouts came to see me one day. He was telling me what they were looking for in a chairman, and I thought he wanted to pick my brain. Oh, was I wrong. He wanted me to agree to chair this event. Well, he’s a good salesman, as he convinced me to do it.
So then, I twisted a couple of other arms to get my “captains,” the people; who have a harder job than me. And, now we’re looking for table hosts and attendees.
After this writing, but before the printing, we should know if we have all the people lined up that we need. And I have a feeling my captains will have done well, but will still need a little help.
That’s why I’m appealing here. Then, after this, I quit. I’m saying no. I used to be good at it, then I served better than two years as the Chair of the Chamber of Commerce, and I’m active in Kiwanis, and I work a lot too. Enough is enough.
Of course, I may owe my captains, and they may coerce me into small projects, but right now I’m a little stressed. We live in a great community, and it’s only fitting to give back, but I need a little break. So help me out here, and let’s get this project behind us. Thanks!
